We are AUTHORS!

Our Kiwi class are developing a sense of themselves as authors.  They are learning to write for an audience and part of this process involves publishing their work.  Published work may be in a handwritten form or at times we will use the laptops to type out our writing.

Have a look at these two Kiwi class members busy developing their publishing skills!

Problem Solving Smurfs

In our Kiwi class we recognise that the operations of mathematics are tools we can use to help us solve contextual/real-life problems.
Addition has been our focus this week and the Kiwi class are learning to understand addition as combining two sets.  This knowledge came in handy today when we had to figure out how many 'Smurfs' were on the bus.  Students used various strategies to solve this tricky problem from counting all of the 'Smurfs', to bridging ten.

We are always learning that there are many different ways to solve the same problem!

Have a look at what two of us did!

Run, Run, Run as fast as you can.......you can't catch me.......I'm a cross-country fan!

Our recent cross-country race took place on a day filled with dark clouds and heavy rain.  Fortunately for our Kiwi class, there was a moment where the clouds parted and sunshine emerged allowing us to take part in the much anticipated race.  Our Kiwi class had set themselves individual goals and they solidly set to achieving their objectives.  Whether it was keeping pace with a buddy, running without stopping or maintaining a consistent team, all of the Kiwi class left the running course with HUGE grins on their happy faces.
Effort = Achievement!
Our Kiwi class is filled with children who demonstrate an excellent work ethic and then reap the rewards of their input.  Well done to each of you!

Can't wait to see you blitz the course again next year!

Ready, Set, GO!

We went to the Zoo, Zoo, Zoo........

........and it wasn't raining and the animals were amazing!

The learning focus for our visit to the Auckland Zoo was 'Animals and their Habitats'.
A Zoo guide took our Year 1 and Year 2 classes around the New Zealand Natural Treasures enclosures where we looked at the different habitats our native birds live in.
We saw Kea, Kiwi and Kaka.  We also had the opportunity to see a Kereru up close.

Have a look at our photos.

The bill of a duck!

A very close encounter!

Bee Bot and the Beast

During Programming this week, two of our Kiwi class members decided that 'The Beast' (aka our little Bee Bot) would leave his castle to visit Belle's father Maurice.

They programmed the Beast to walk along the path, swim across the river and continue on his journey to reach Maurice's home.

Next, they wrote the code and passed it on to a fellow Kiwi class member who had to follow the instructions to ensure that 'The Beast' reached his destination.

Our Kiwi class are clever programmers!
